Motifs and Monsters in Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s buildings are grey and splattered in sooty black. The other dominant colour is mossy green from the surrounding hills and parklands.

The greys and greens are punctuated by bright bursts of colour from shop fronts, posters and people.

If you look around, you can find Scottish designs everywhere.

Tartan isn’t the only Scottish motif that patterns the city. There are thistle-themed designs all around, popping up (like weeds) in wallpapers, carpets and shopping bags.

And you can’t travel to Loch Ness without being greeted by another familiar symbol…
