Glendalough and Kilkenny, Ireland

On our third day in Dublin we went on a guided bus tour to Kilkenny city.

The medieval capital of Ireland - Kilkenny city

Along the way we stopped at Glendalough in the Wicklow mountains.

Summer at the Irish lakes. Unfortunately the scheduled walk was cancelled due to bad weather.

We drove through the scenic Wicklow Gap.  Very green.

Our Irish guide provided a witty and informative commentary throughout the day.

We were let off the leash in Kilkenny city for lunch and a self-guided tour of the castle.  The town was decked out in the colours of the local hurling team who had an important up and coming match against Cork.  (Kilkenny won, we later found out.)

Kilkenny castle where the sun finally came out.

It felt a bit like a school excursion but we enjoyed seeing what lay beyond Dublin and this was a cost-effective and stress-free way to do it.
